The Kaweco Sport fountain pen is one of the oldest pen designs still in production. Originally launched in 1911 by the Heidelberger Federhalterfabrik company, it was revived in its modern form in the 1980s and has been continuously refined since. Today it's the most recommended pocket fountain pen in the world — compact, robust, and available in a range of materials and formats that make it as suitable for a writer's coat pocket as an illustrator's studio.
What makes the Kaweco Sport distinctive
The Sport's defining characteristic is its size transformation. Capped, it's around 10.5cm long — genuinely pocketable, fitting comfortably in a jacket or jeans pocket without creating a visible bulge. Posted (cap placed on the back of the barrel), it extends to around 13cm — a comfortable full-size writing length. This makes it unique among fountain pens: a pen that's designed for both extreme portability and comfortable extended writing in the same object.
The body is octagonal (on most models), which prevents rolling off surfaces. The cap is faceted to match, with an optional clip sold separately on most versions. The pen takes standard international short cartridges — a cross-brand format used by many European manufacturers — and Kaweco's own mini converter for bottled ink, though the converter's capacity is small given the Sport's compact body.
The Kaweco Sport fountain pen
The fountain pen version is the heart of the range. It accepts standard international short cartridges (compatible with inks from Kaweco, Pelikan, Waterman, and many others — which broadens ink choice considerably) and the Kaweco mini converter for bottled inks. Note that LAMY cartridges are a different, proprietary shape and don't fit.
Nibs are steel, made in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad, and Double Broad sizes. Replacement nibs are simple to swap — pull the old nib off the feed with a cloth or tape; press the new one on. This makes the Sport highly customisable without buying a new pen for a different nib size.
Eyedropper conversion: The Sport's plastic body can be converted to an eyedropper pen — filling the entire barrel as the ink reservoir, giving it an ink capacity of approximately 1.2ml (far more than any cartridge or converter). This requires an O-ring seal and silicone grease on the section threads to prevent leaking, but turns the Sport into the highest-capacity fountain pen of its size anywhere. A favourite among fountain pen enthusiasts who want to travel with a compact pen and generous ink supply.
The Kaweco Sport series
Multiple material and finish variants give the Sport's classic body very different characters:
Classic Sport — The standard version in plastic. Lightweight, inexpensive, and made in the widest colour range. The most practical everyday choice. The Skyline Sport puts the same pen in softer pastel and pale colours, and the Lunar Sport in a moon-inspired finish.
Frosted Sport — Translucent plastic in tropical fruit-inspired colours. The translucency shows the ink inside the cartridge or barrel, which has practical and aesthetic appeal.
AL Sport — Anodised aluminium body in the same Sport design. Significantly heavier and more premium-feeling than the plastic versions. Matte coloured finishes. Slightly more susceptible to galling on the aluminium threads over time — a small amount of silicone grease on the threads prevents this.
ART Sport — Hand-turned acrylic in marbled patterns, so no two pens look quite alike. The Sport at its most decorative.
Brass Sport — Solid brass body that develops a patina with handling. The heaviest version. Gains character with use as the brass darkens and develops individual marks.
Steel Sport — Solid stainless steel. Extremely durable, matte finish. Similar weight to the Brass but without the patina development.
Collection Sports (annual limited editions) — Released yearly, often with unique acrylic or special finish barrels. Once sold out, they're gone.
Beyond the fountain pen
The Sport body is available across all major pen and pencil types:
Ballpoint: Uses a D1 refill (a standard size compatible with many other brands). The most maintenance-free version — no ink to manage, no nib to care for. Reliable everyday carry.
Rollerball: Smooth water-based ink in the same pocket body, such as the Skyline Sport rollerball.

Inks for the Kaweco Sport
Kaweco ink cartridges come in standard international short format and a wide choice of colours, and Kaweco's 50ml bottled inks, such as Paradise Blue and Caramel Brown, stand on their own as quality inks regardless of the pen.
The standard international short cartridge format also allows Pelikan Edelstein, Diamine (in cartridge format), J. Herbin, and many other brand cartridges — significantly expanding colour choice without needing the converter.
Kaweco Sport vs LAMY Safari
The two most recommended starter fountain pens in the world, and they suit different writers. The LAMY Safari is larger (better for extended writing), has a triangular grip (better for writers learning correct hold), and uses LAMY's proprietary cartridge system. The Sport is smaller (better for pocket carry and occasional writing), has a round grip (more comfortable for non-standard grips), and uses standard international cartridges (more ink choice). Writers who want a desk or bag pen tend toward the Safari; writers who want a pocket pen tend toward the Sport. Many enthusiasts own both.

For a first Kaweco Sport: Classic Sport fountain pen in Fine or Medium. The plastic body is light, inexpensive, and available in the most colours. Fine suits smaller handwriting; Medium suits larger handwriting and shows ink character better.
